Safety Coordinator

    Job description

    Responsible for assisting plant management to ensure compliance with legal requirements and environmental regulations. Helps ensure that environmental and safety objectives are achieved consistent with company policies. Understands the environmental aspects, impacts, objectives and targets of General Aluminum and how these factors affect day-to-day operations. Maintains good housekeeping, safety and environmental standards. Ensures that employees understand their roles, responsibilities and accountabilities to the system.

    Assists plant management in the planning and implementation of safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local, state and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.

    Plans and implements programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices, fire prevention, and correct handling techniques for chemicals, toxins, equipment and other materials.

    Assists with ensuring regular departmental safety audits are performed to detect existing or potential accident / health hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.

    Conducts monthly safety committee meetings.

    Participates in new hire orientation process.

    Helps with the maintenance of the list of hazardous materials and substances used in the company.

    Ensures that governmental regulations with regard to labeling, safe handling, storage, first-aid, elimination /disposal of hazardous materials are known and are observed.

    Provides information, signs, posters, barriers and other materials to warn of potential /actual safety hazards.

    Participates in the investigation of accidents / injuries and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for organization for use in hearings, lawsuits and insurance investigations.

    Assists with the environmental/safety reports required by regulatory agencies.

    As requested, provides assistance with the administration of worker’s compensation programs, including working with the insurance carrier to reduce employee lost time.

    Aware of consequences to the customer, environment and the employee, if procedures are not followed.

    Provides assistance with maintaining the Quality and Environmental Management System certifications.

    Travel is required for this position between Huntington, IN and Freemont, IN.

    All other duties as deemed necessary by supervisor.

    Salary: $21.00 - $27.00 per hour
